Personal Journal

A quote that you find inspirational regarding the role that advocacy can have in the lives of young children and their families. Then, post responses to the following:
    • “When you know better you do better.”& nbsp;
      Maya Angelou

    • What inspires and excites you most about your advocacy plan and being an advocate?
  • What inspire me and excite me most about my advocacy plan is that I can see it coming together. While I'm gathering all of my information and speaking with my host teacher and the director, they too see what it is that I'm trying to do, by educating my parents more on the significance of literacy at home. They are getting excited about implementing the program and it's giving me that boast of energy that I need to continue.
    • What challenges and/or anxieties do you feel related to engaging in the advocacy efforts you have targeted?
  • A anxiety that I begin that's forming is me thinking about my presentation. I'm a peoples person by when it comes to doing a presentation I begin to get nervous and it tends to show in my speech. Also, I'm wondering do I have everything in order so that my plan come across the way I'm trying to display it.
    • What do you believe will be most effective in helping you overcome any challenging emotions you may be feeling with regard to presenting and implementing your Advocacy Action Plan?
  • I believe the most effective in helping me overcome my challenges in implementing my Advocacy Plan is speaking more with my teacher in what I want to convey. I also use my family members as if they are the teachers, admin and parents. They are helping me to speak clearly and slow down with my words, not becoming too nervous.
    • How can you encourage others in their advocacy efforts, and how can others encourage you?
  • I would say to others is to make sure you have everything in order for your presentation, take your time and to also use your family members to help. My peers can encourage me by giving me the truth on how my plan actually sounds. I think constructing criticisms is the best key.

  1. I enjoyed reading your response. I have that problem too! I get nervous with my presentation too. The best way is to take deep breath. This helps me get rid of the stress. It's also important to read the presentation very slowly and clear. That way, they could understand what you are trying to say. Good luck with your research and presentation.

  2. Hi Kenika,
    I enjoyed reading your response . I use to get nervous whenever I had to do any kind of presentations in front of anyone.Since I have been teaching I find it simple and easy to talk in front of people . I learned that I can face any kind of challenge that may come my way if I stay focus and prepared.

  3. I had similar thoughts regarding how I need constructive criticism to better my plan. Have you always been open to criticism? I used to take all criticism personally and very negatively. Through activities like this, I am starting to see how opinions, other than my own, do more good than harm. If you get the chance, I would be happy to hear what you have to say about my plan.

  4. Hello and thank you for your post. I can agree that if a person new better they will do better. For example, if a person know how to respect others and they will in fact respect and treat others better and they will get respect back in return. I can see that you are relying on your host teacher to help you with your efforts. I can say that I am relying on mine as well. I can say that my host teacher is a true advocate because she has actually created organizations that support different efforts. Another quote that is useful: "It's not what you know it's who you know". Whom a person knows can be the answer to many things. I feel that my host teacher has been very helpful in helping me with my advocacy efforts. My efforts are to be resourceful in supporting families in poverty and my host teacher has provided me with great resources that I have not even thought of. :)

  6. Hi Kenika, I love your quote by Maya Angelou. This quote has kept me going all these years when it has came down to school, family and difficult things that I have been faced with. Yet I enjoyed reading your blog and it is nice to know that you can take some criticism because most people can dish it out but can't take it. Keep up the good work and happy blogging!!

  7. Great post! Literacy is my advocacy plan as well. I feel that literacy beginning at a young age is very important. I believe that it is beneficial to involve the parents and make sure that there are open lines of communication. I like your idea of using your family and peers to practice your presentation. I feel like you when you said you are a people person but when giving a presentation your nervousness shows in your speech. I too talk fast and my face becomes flushed. I am nervous about the final presentation of something that I have worked so hard on. No one likes failure. Good luck to you in the final stages of your advocacy plan.
